Nordic-powered Bluetooth low energy sleep analysis solution promotes enhanced sleep quality

Sleep Dot employs Nordic Semiconductor's nRF52832 SoC, a powerful Bluetooth low energy SoC with embedded 64MHz, 32-bit ARM Cortex M4F processor, to support wireless sleep monitoring application

Oslo, Norway, Aug. 18, 2016 –

Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Shenzhen, China-based sleep technology company, Sleepace, has launched a sleep monitoring device called Sleep Dot. Sleep Dot employs Nordic's nRF52832 System-on-Chip (SoC) to provide Bluetooth low energy (previously known as Bluetooth Smart) wireless connectivity over a range of 10m, while meeting the application's low power consumption requirements.

The Sleep Dot is attached to the upper corner of a pillow and provides sleep monitoring feedback as well as an analysis of the user's sleep cycle and body movement during sleep using Sleep Dot's in-built sensors and proprietary algorithms. The results, together with professional advice on improving sleep quality, are presented via the Sleepace app on the user's iOS or Android-compatible Bluetooth-equipped mobile device. From the app, the user can also select sounds and music to promote sleep and as a waking alarm. Such alarms are designed to wake the user 'naturally' each morning when Sleepace detects a shallow state of sleep.

If used in conjunction with Sleepace's RestOn sleep monitor and Nox Sleep Light, the user can also measure and review parameters including heart rate, breathing, time required to fall asleep, sleep duration, as well as environmental data such as temperature, humidity, noise, and light intensity.

Sleep Dot weighs just 15g, comes in a 3.3 by 3.3 by 1.3cm form factor, and uses a CR2032 coin cell battery providing a battery life in excess of three months before it requires replacement, thanks in part to the ultra low power consumption of the nRF52832 SoC. The nRF52832 has been engineered to minimize power consumption with features such as the 2.4GHz radio's 5.5mA peak RX/TX currents and a fully-automatic power management system that reduces power consumption by up to 80 percent compared with Nordic's nRF51 Series SoCs. The result is a Bluetooth low energy solution which offers 90 CoreMark/mA, up to twice as power efficient as competing devices.

Nordic's nRF52832 Bluetooth low energy SoC, a member of Nordic Semiconductor's sixth generation of ultra low power (ULP) wireless connectivity solutions, combines a 64MHz, 32-bit ARM Cortex M4F processor with a 2.4GHz multiprotocol radio (fully compatible with Bluetooth 4.2, ANT™ and proprietary 2.4GHz RF software) with -96 dB RX sensitivity, with 512 kB Flash memory and 64 kB RAM. When launched, the SoC was the world's highest performance single-chip Bluetooth low energy solution, delivering up to 60 percent more generic processing power, offering 10 times the Floating Point performance and twice the DSP performance compared to competing solutions.

"We selected the nRF52832 chip after comparing it to many alternatives," explains Long Liangzhen, Co-Founder and COO of Sleepace. "Nordic Semiconductor is a famous brand in Bluetooth [low energy] technology and its products are highly reliable. Ultimately the nRF2832 chip's parameters were ideally suited for our product's requirements."
